Volunteer in India

HEAL is accepting applications for volunteers to travel to India for four weeks in August 2006.

Volunteers are needed with interests in community health, microcredit, gardening, social work, and literacy. Two volunteers will be trained in each of the above specializations before leaving for India. Two teams, including a volunteer specialist in each of the five areas, will go to India. One team will work in Hyderabad and the other in Bapatla. The specialists will spend a few days observing the HEAL social workers. Then they will conduct training lessons where they help the social workers to improve their knowledge, teaching skills, and use of available resources. After training sessions in the mornings, HEAL volunteers will go with the social workers into the villages and slums in the afternoons to practice what they taught.

Two team managers with experience in India will be leading the trip. We also need two volunteers who will build relationships with, and identify resources in, other non-profit organizations operating in the same areas as HEAL. Finally, we are interested in sending a photographer/videographer.

The dates for the trip have not been determined. The cost of the trip in 2005 was $2800, which includes airfare, room, and board. It does not include medication (vaccinations, anti-malaria pills, mosquito repellent) or other costs of travel (passport, visa, changed flights). HEAL is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit foundation, so any funds contributed towards your trip are tax-deductible. We want to help every volunteer fundraise the money needed to go, and will work with you on an individual basis to help secure that funding.

Every year we offer the option of paying a little more and going to the Taj Mahal in Agra. All but one of our past volunteers have gone, and it is an exciting end to the four-week trip.
